Booktube in the New York Times!

If you were anything like me, you would have logged onto Twitter a couple of days ago and noticed everyone sharing an article that the New York Times had written about the stars behind Booktube (click here to read the article).

The original article has since been RTed over 500 times on Twitter from the NYT Book account, and even shared on the Youtube Creators Twitter account. I think it’s incredible that Booktube has finally been recognised as such a great community and the huge influence it plays in the book industry.

The article did only focus on those Booktubers who predominantly promote YA (and the “big” booktubers at that), and in that aspect, I would love the appreciation to spread to other booktubers, particularly those from diverse backgrounds and the demand from #ownvoices.

However, I think the last sentence of the article really sums up my thoughts:

“Events like these [in reference to Booktube-A-Thon] create momentum around books that’s hard to replicate in real life. Reading and writing are solitary activities; BookTube is changing that.”

The influence that social media – Youtube, Twitter, Blogs and Instagram – can have on the book industry should never be underestimated. Not only for book publishers who are looking to promote their books, but also as a book community, it has allowed people to connect with others across the world who are interested in the same things as themselves.

It was Christine from PolandBananasBooks who stated that ““I was reading a lot of books, and I had no one to discuss them with,” and with nearly 400,000 subscribers, it shows how many of us in the community there are out there. Reading a book and knowing that there are people you can turn to, to discuss it online is a fantastic feeling. It helps me stay motivated and helps ignite my passion for books and I hope the community continues to expand and becomes even more inclusive of everyone across the world.
